Hancock Review

Review date: 01.12.2008
Our rating:

Hancock stars Will Smith as an amnesiac alcoholic superhero who bungles his good deeds and fights crime with booze on his breath until he meets PR expert Ray and sets out to reform himself. It’s a tidy, simple idea for a comedy superhero movie, and Hancock works quite nicely as exactly that until it’s more than half done, when a ridiculous plot twist and an unexpected shift in tone succeed in ruining the film Credit where it’s due, Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman all give good performances, and Hancock’s blunders are seen in lovingly detailed, debris-strewn special effects that benefit from Blu-ray’s sharpness. The 5.1 Dolby True HD soundtrack gives you an exceptionally clear mix even when there’s a lot going on and the extras package is broad if not innovative. Sadly, none of that quite makes up for a movie that doesn’t deliver on its initial promise.

Gran Torino is a much needed return to directorial form for Clint Eastwood, offering gentle red herrings and convincing character development in the course of a bathetic story.
